BEST OF THE WORLD'S ARMS AT THE PALACE ARMOURY
Within the Grandmaster’s Palace, the Palace Armoury in Valletta holds a wealth of Hospitaller history. As the main armoury of the Order of Saint John it boasts one of the world’s largest collections of armour in the world, which at its prime, housed arsenal for thousands of Hospitaller soldiers. A restoration project, completed in 1860 under Governor John Gaspard Le Marchant saw the Armoury become Malta’s first public museum. Though the collection was moved from its original hall in 1975 after aerial bombing during WWII, it remains a rarity to find such an established collection still in its original building.
The collection includes armour for the common soldier as well as more ornate pieces used by noblemen and can be traced back to European, Ottoman and Islamic roots. Firearms, canons and artillery are displayed alongside the armour. From 1921 the original room was repurposed for Malta’s House of Representatives but in 2015 a new Parliament House designed by Renzo Piano was inaugurated. Open Monday- Sunday from 09:00- 17:00 and close to the bus terminus in Valletta which services the whole island, price of entry ranges from €5 for children and €10 for adults, with infants under 5 admitted free of charge.
