RELAX AND ENJOY THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF RAMLA BAY
At the bottom of a lush valley, nestled amongst terraced farmland lies Ramla Bay. Its full name 'Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra' means red sandy beach, a perfect description of its undulating sand dunes and their unique deep red colour. The nearest village is Xaghra which sits at the top of the valley. The area retains a tranquil, natural beauty and serves as a location for the conservation of plants and animals who find habitation in the sand dunes. This wide and expansive sandy beach is perfect for swimming and has been granted Blue Flag status, guaranteeing excellent safety and water quality.
A short ascent along a sandy path leads to Calypso Cave. Famed for its mythological reference in Homer’s Odyssey, Calypso Cave overlooks the bay from the adjoining cliff face, but Ramla’s history is also hidden beneath the sand. Formerly the site of a luxurious and ornate Roman Villa, it is believed that remains still lie buried under the sand dunes. Ramla is a popular swimming spot for locals and tourists alike and is well serviced by bus. Route 302 from Victoria services the beach every hour.
