XLENDI, A SMALL BAY WITH A LOT TO OFFER
Towers, tombs and caves with a sandy beach to top it off. This small village at the bottom of a luscious valley has a quiet charm. Xlendi’s sandy beach is popular with families due to its shallow waters. Once a Roman port, the bay is the location of many shipwrecks. A rocky outcrop provides perfect conditions for snorkelers, divers or those looking to catch some rays of sunshine. Friendly restaurants and vendors service the bay, maintaining a tranquil ambiance.
Sofia Bar & Restaurant in #Xlendi is open everyday 12.30pm-3.00pm! Come enjoy the Vegan option menu! ????????????????????— WowMalta Tips (@WowMalta) October 9, 2017
Caves litter the adjacent cliffside. Famed for its pure blue waters, Catherine of Siena’s Cave lies to the right of the bay. A flight of stairs traversing the cliff face leads to Caroline’s Cave. Named after the founder of the Augustinian Sisters in Gozo, the cave was once used by the sisters as a swimming location. The surrounding area promises more to explore. From the Punic-Byzantine tombs at St Simon’s Point to Grandmaster Lascaris’ watchtower, those who venture a little further will be rewarded. Excavated into the cliffs, Xlendi Emergency Flour Mill was commissioned by the British Colonial Office as an emergency provision during the Cold War. Xlendi has something for everyone and is serviced by bus route 306 from Victoria.
