BIRGU, THE CITY OF VICTORY
South of the Grand Harbour, Birgu is a fortified city with a rich military and maritime history. In 1530, the Knights of St John made Birgu Malta’s Capital and began strengthening the fortifications as defense against the Ottomans. Birgu has been alternatively referred to as Vittoriosa, since it was named City of Victory due to its critical role during the Great Siege. Later home to the British Navy’s Mediterranean fleet, the Maritime Museum boasts impressive collections. Birgu’s fascinating wartime history can be further explored at the Malta at War Museum which contains an extensive assortment of WW2 memorabilia alongside interactive activities.
This stunning city is best navigated on foot in order to enjoy the narrow winding streets and historic buildings which lie behind its fortified walls. From the former seat of the Grandmaster at Fort St Angelo to the Inquisitor’s Palace, there is so much to explore. On August 10th, the parish church of St Lawrence celebrates its annual feast in an explosion of celebrations, fireworks and processions. Birgu is easily accessible from Valletta via bus routes 2 and 4. To view the fortifications at their best, the Valletta Ferry also crosses the harbour to nearby Cospicua every 30 minutes for the bargain price of €1.50 for a single passage.
